Mother's Day!
Goodbye Ronald McDonald and Toucan Sam?

On Thursday the federal government proposed sweeping new guidelines on food advertisements aimed toward children. These guidelines would place restrictions on how the food industry advertises soda, cereal, ice cream, chocolate, snacks, restaurant meals, and other food to children. Citing the epidemic of childhood obesity, regulators seek to implement a range of tactics currently used to endorse foods high in sugar, fat or salt to children. According to CBC News, new findings from Yale University show, “…that cereals marketed directly to children have 85 per cent more sugar, 65 per cent less fibre and 60 per cent more sodium than cereals marketed to adults.”Essentially, regulators are requiring food marketers and restaurant companies to either make products healthier or stop marketing them to children. These include a range of marketing strategies, ranging from television ads, print ads, interactive media, product placement in movies, and the use of movie characters in cross promotions and fast-food children's meals.
